The Chronology of Tagging
Most commonly, the progression of graffiti is one that becomes more immersive as time and exposure goes on. Most writers start by creating simple tags, and progress to throw-up, with very few, either of lack of talent or ability, reaching the echelons of creating highly artistic pieces or productions (Alonso, 1998). Novice writers begin with few associations and experience being classified as “toys” (Spicer, 2005. p.27). This is often used as a derogatory term by competing writers insulting another writer’s work as not having any skill or reputation. These writers begin with simple tags, attempting to build their reputations by tagging as often as possible and in the most visible locations (Spicer, 2005). As one progresses in building a reputation, street credibility or “cred” they move “up” in the standings of the graffiti world to a higher level of respect. As writers advance in reputation some also progress in the style of their graffiti writing painting larger bubble lettered, adding in more artistic effects such as highlights and drop shadows. As writers continue on the path of establishing themselves in the graffiti community they often join groups or crews and can be awarded the respected titles of “Kings/Queens” (Spicer, 2005. p. 27). Upping ones reputation to this level requires writing in highly visible hard to access locations as well as painting with style and artistic prowess in the creation of pieces and productions. Looking for other opportunities to further their graffiti reputations, writers begin traveling outside of their immediate neighborhoods into other communities spreading their tags in hopes of gaining more recognition (Spicer, 2005).
